Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-4
Цитата:
The Bf 109 E-4 was different to previous models and would be the basis for all further Bf 109E developments. The most notable change was by using the modified 20 mm MG-FF/M wing cannon and having improved head armor for the pilot.

The E-3 was replaced by the E-4 (with many airframes being upgraded to E-4 standards starting at the beginning of the Battle of Britain) which was different in some small details, most notably by using the modified 20 mm MG-FF/M wing cannon and having improved head armour for the pilot.

Messerschmitt Bf 109 E vol. I
Цитата:
Early lessons learned in combat operations demonstrated that cockpit armor protection needed to be strengthened. The solution was the re-design of the windshield to include a thick, bullet-proof front panel and the addition of armor plating behind the pilot’s back. The re-designed windshield, stronger, heavier canopy framing and armor plating behind the pilot’s seat installed on Bf 109 E models further deteriorated visibility from the fighter’s cockpit.

Where is the aromor plate behind the pilots' head in the Bf-109 E-1 and the Bf-109 E-3?!
On August 24, 1940 the Bf 109E-4 flown by Fw. Artur Beese of 9./JG 26 was shot up by R.A.F. fighters.
Beese crash landed his “Yellow 11” near St. Ingelvert, France.
Beese survived the crash.
He owed his life to his head armor that stopped a bullet that entered the cockpit from behind.
