In 1942 the Wiener Neustadter Flugzeugwerke built a total of 240 aircraft of the F-4/R1 version. The R1 designation, for "Rustzustand 1" (Equipment Condition 1), denoted provision for the installation of two MG 151/15 cannon in gondola-shaped fairings beneath the wings outboard of the wheel wells. Actual installation of this supplementary armament appears to have been relatively rare and its use has so far been confirmed only by I./JG 52 and I. and III./ JG 3. On the other hand numerous F-4/R1 aircraft were to be seen with JG 77 in the early summer of 1942 which carried no gondola-mounted weapons.
