Luftwaffe Emblems 1939-1945

Название: Luftwaffe Emblems 1939-1945
Автор: Barry Ketley
Издательство: Flight Recorder Publications
Год издания: 2012
ISBN: 978-0-9554268-3-4
Язык: English
Количество страниц: 192
Формат: PDF
Размер: 50,3 MB

One of the most striking features of Luftwaffe aircraft during the Second World War was the widespread use of distinctive badges and emblems that identified individual Luftwaffe units. Some of these insignia remained in use throughout the war and even into the final days of the conflict.

The Luftwaffe units using their own insignia ranged in size from full-blown Luftflotten (Air Fleets), down to small temporary groupings of a rotte (pair) of aircraft. Many such units were famous fighter and bomber units - such as JG 2, ZG 76, KG 2 and KG 54. Others were less well-known including maritime squadrons, humble training units and even communication flights. Whatever their status, they proudly carried their own unique badge on their aircraft, but until now there has been no comprehensive reference source for these emblems.

Now, this fully revised and greatly expanded edition of Luftwaffe Emblems provides a unique reference to these markings and features over 1,000 emblems - many of which were previously unknown - along with many previously unpublished photographs. Grouped by squadron type and function, Luftwaffe Emblems is an exceptional reference aid for modellers, historians, enthusiasts and anyone with an interest in WWII Luftwaffe aircraft.

Далеко не "свежачок", но, тем не менее, не такое уж бесполезное чтиво ... КМК И даже в некоторой степени "монументальное", я бы сказал

The Official Monogram U.S. Navy & Marine Corps Aircraft Color Guide Vol. 1: 1911-1939

The constantly changing colors and markings of US Navy aircraft reflect attempts at better recognition and operation, as well as the political and geographical influences affecting military actions.
Each has been adopted for aspecific purpose after thoughtful consideration by officers of the Fleet and the Bureau of Aeronautics in an attempt to standardize colors and markings throughout the naval service. The resultant regulations of the 1930's was an outstanding system for the time. After fifteen years of experimentation, the Navy developed by 1939 the most sophisticated system of military markings in the world. It worked well then because of the comparatively small size of naval aviation. However, the limited number of basic colors never would have been able to keep up with the explosive growth of the 1940's, so in a way it was a good thing that they could gracefully giv way to the wartime light gray of 1941.
It has taken sixty years for some of this information to be published, and most of the specific details and dates have not been available until now Major Elliott has done an outstanding job of assimilating a vast array of complicated and sometimes contradictory information, organizing it in a logical manner, and making it available for the first time. This is particularly gratifying to those of us who have lived through this period and yet often have been frustrated by an inability to explain what we have seen.
There is no doubt that this series of volumes will be the Masterwork on this subject and the basic reference work for all to benefit from.

Throughout the history of Navy and Marine Corps aviation, the systems used to mark and paint aircraft have been extremely confusing. The lack of a complete history of the subject has resulted largely from the scattered condition of the reference collections. It has taken Jack Elliott a quarter-century to compile his multi-volume history of this subject. No one familiar with the subject matter and its documentation can be surprised that the project took so long. Volume I covers the years 1911 through 1939. Volume II covers the important ten years from 1940 to 1949 during which expansion and change were rules and not exceptions in the Navy and Marine Corps. The decade witnessed drastic changes in the systems the Navy and Marine Corps had used since the 1920's to mark and paint aircraft. The changes came so fast and were so numerous that their implementation was often left to the discretion of commanding officers and the availability of resources.
This second volume of the Elliott history documents these changes and offers explanations for them. The Official Monogram US Navy & Marine Corps Aircraft Color Guide, Vol. 2, 1940 to 1949, fills an important gap in this area of Navy and Marine Corps aviation history.

It's been said that "There are two kinds of people in this world: those who believe there are two kinds of people, and those who don't." When it comes to aircraft color and markings, there really are only two kinds of people: Those like John Elliott who dig into all the details and get them straight - and the rest of us.
With this third volume in his series on US Navy and Marine Corps Aircraft Color and Markings, those of us having an interest in the subject will relate to the different volumes in different ways. By now, the first years, up through 1939, are a matter of academic interest to all but a very few who still care about the colorful naval aircraft that they flew or maintained during those years. With the tremendous expansion that began in 1940, and continued through World War II, there are a great number of us "who were there" in one way or another and translated our mostly modeling interest to the real thing. Enamored of this new relationship, color and markings interests were maintained mostly by the few - such as Bill Larkins who wrote the foreword for John's first volume. Among those who stayed in, joined the reserves, or either took up or reverted to modeling after the War, the interests in the subject were varied at the time - and continue to be. John's second volume is "the word" for all who reflect on this aspect of that period.
In my own case I have a particular identification with the fifties. For those years tied me to Naval Aviation, starting when recalled to active duty with my Reserve FASRON from my drafting board at Boeing. After a couple of different thrusts, direct involvement came with the engineering of the navy's aircraft - and opportunities to sample the product - as the Navy and Marines went through their major transition to the turbine engine - and supersonic fighter age. Through these years, there was not only a major transition in equipment (with the exception of old favorites like "Bugsmashers" and "Spads"), but the Sea Blue finish which most of us had grown up with in the real world gave way to gray, white, and something
called "day-glo" - though its generally weathered look soon reverted to more substantial orange. The patchwork colors - particularly at Reserve Bases - were nowhere better illustrated than the ReserVe FJ-2s at
Columbus, Ohio, when business took me to what was then a dynamic, forward-looking engineering group at North American Aviation's now long gone Columbus Division. I know there were Sea Blue, Orange and White, and Gray and White Furys seen on the line as TWA's Martin 202A or 404 landed or took off at Port Columbus - I'd like to think there were even one or two natural metal ones, but that's probably my memory playing tricks again.
Anyway, with another heavy, but colorful volume, John lays it all out for those who have an interest in naval aircraft generally, and a particular interest in those of the fifties. Color and markings data just doesn't get any better than this!

The Official Monogram US Navy & Marine Corps Aircraft Color Guide, Vol 4: 1960-1993

Throughout the history of Naval Aviation, numerous changes occurred in the paint schemes and markings used on Navy and Marine Corps aircraft. Some of these changes can be documented through review of old and new specifications, standards and correspondence. However, many of the paint schemes that have at one time or another appeared on Navy and Marine Corps aircraft were experimental in nature or implemented only at the squadron or air wing level. Accordingly, little documentation is available to determine the details of the paint scheme applied or why such a scheme was utilized. John Elliott, with his first three volumes of the Official Monogram US Navy & Marine Corps Aircraft Color Guide provided a much clearer insight into the use of paint schemes and markings of aircraft since the beginning of Naval Aviation in 1911.
John Elliott's fourth and final volume covers the period of 1960 to 1993. During this period, as with the periods covered in his previous volumes, numerous changes occurred. The Navy progressed from glossy paint schemes with colorful markings to the present flat gray tactical paint schemes with contrasting gray markings. Gone are the days of colorful tail markings and red white and blue national insignias. Practicality replaced the romantic notion of knights in the sky with their colorful coats-of-arms. Along the way, many experimental schemes were tested and discarded. John Elliott provides an excellent account of this latest evolution in his final volume.
One may ask if the use of paint schemes are still important in the current era of sophisticated weapon and missile systems? The answer to the question is an unequivocal yes! Optical tracking is still vital to certain anti-aircraft weapon systems. In order to maximize the survivability of an aircraft one must address all factors effecting survivability. One factor is minimal visual detectability. The current schemes used on Navy and Marine Corps aircraft while not flashy, increase survivability. The aircraft might not look pretty, but their chances of a round trip are increased with today's paint schemes. So when you compare the colorful schemes in the first three volumes to the schemes in this volume, keep this in mind. Better a dull airplane than a missing one.

Luftwaffe Fighters

The Messerschmitt Bf 109 and Focke-Wulf Fw 190 were at the forefront of the action as the Luftwaffe battled the combined might of the Allied air forces across Western Europe and beyond during the Second World War. Flying in every front, from desert sands to frozen tundra, they featured a hugely diverse range of markings and colour schemes which have fascinated aviation enthusiasts ever since.

Luftwaffe Fighters offers more than 200 highly detailed full colour profiles from world renowned artist Claes Sundin, covering not just the two most famous types but also front line single-seaters such as the Me 262, Me 163, Ta 152 and He 162 plus the two-seater Bf 110 and night fighter versions of the Ju 88, Do 17, Do 215, Do 217 and the dedicated night fighter He 219. The markings of aircraft piloted by aces such as Erich Hartmann, Gerd Barkhorn and Otto Kittel are meticulously reproduced, based on original photographs, alongside a wide range of schemes from every year of the war and every front where the Luftwaffe saw action.

This is a book about aviation art - not paintings of aircraft hanging in the galleries of a museum, but rather paintings ON aircraft. These paintings helped personalize the aircraft for its crew and they always told a story.

Nose art - there is no definition for it in any Webster’s Dictionary. But just ask any air or ground crewmen from any war since the Second World War and they’ll tell you not only what it is, but what it meant to them. It was a way of personalizing a piece of machinery that you had to depend on and it appeared on almost everything that was used in combat, from aircraft to tanks. Most of the really beautiful and/or outrageous art appeared on aircraft.

NOSE ART - If Webster had defined the term he probably would have noted that it was the personalization of some type of machine, usually an aircraft, with a name and/or painting that reflected the present “owners” feelings toward that machine, his reason for using that machine, or his present emotions. Thus NOSE ART could express everything from love to hate to patriotism to quirks that only his machine had at the time. The actual “art” would range from paintings of gorgeous women to cartoon characters to just a simple name.

Battle of Britain: Camouflage & Markings 1940

Автор(ы): Peter Scott & Gary Madgwick
Издательство: The Aviation Workshop
Год издания: 2012
Серия: On Target
Номер в серии: 09 (70th Anniversary Special)
ISBN: 9 781904 643364
Язык: English
Страниц: 168
Формат: PDF
Размер: 137 MB

This On Target 70th Anniversary Special features one of the most famous periods in British aviation history, the summer and early autumn of 1940, when RAF Fighter Command and the German Luftwaffe battled for air superiority over the English Channel and the south eastern part of the British Isles. Mainstreaming on the main period, from 10 July to 31 October 1940, the book also goes back to the beginning of World War Two, covering the Phoney War and then the Battles of France and the Low Countries, before dealing with the Battle of Britain proper, which went through a series of marked phases, all of which are covered in detail, and show the development of the camouflage schemes and markings carried by all the combatants, including the French Armee de l Air, Italian Regia Aeronautica, RAF Bomber Command and the Royal Navy s Fleet Air Arm, in over 100 pages of profile and 4-view full color illustrations.

These are the chapters in the book:
  1. Overview to the Battle of Britain
  2. The Phony War
  3. Blitzkrieg! The invasion of France and the Low Countries
  4. Battle of Britain Phase 1: Kanalkampf
  5. Battle of Britain Phase 2: Adlerangriff
  6. Battle of Britain Phase 3: Fight for survival
  7. Battle of Britain Phase 4: The change of tactics
  8. Battle of Britain Phase 5: Night Blitz
  9. The Regia Aeronautica in the Battle of Britain
  10. Bomber and Coastal Command in the Battle of Britain
  11. The Fleet Air Arm in the Battle of Britain
  12. Britain Alone
Each chapter begins with an overview of the strategic and tactical situation and how the aerial assets were deployed. It then covers the colors, markings, serial numbers, and code letters for each one of the relevant Air Forces in the chapter, which includes the French, Dutch, Belgian, and Italian Air Forces, when applicable, besides the RAF and the Luftwaffe.

Each chapter has pictures representative of the airplanes relevant to the aerial operations being discussed, but the meat of the book is the hundreds of color profiles (and some 4-view drawings) of each airplane. Each profile includes a brief description of the airplane, squadron, and location, if known. There are also some black and white images, which are representative of the airplanes and time frame referred to in the chapter, but not necessarily of any given airplane depicted in the profiles.

As interesting as the color profiles are, the historical references of why different colors or tactical markings were adopted, like the black and white underside evolution of the RAF fighters during 1940, are discussed.

Perhaps the only limitation of this book is that the drawings are "flat". By that I mean there is no shade change where the fuselage would have a curve, or any attempt to reproduce some "color modulation" to hint a curved surface.

This book is probably the ultimate collection for color profiles in the Western Front during 1940 and includes profiles from all Air Forces that saw combat during that year in Western Europe. The variety of airframes and Air Forces included in this book is second to none. To complete the book, it also includes a color chart on the last page, covering all relevant Air Forces.
